Check the change
Look at whether the bill uses actual or estimated readings, the dates covered and any change in occupancy or water use. Accessible taps, toilet cisterns and appliances are worth checking for obvious water use or overflow.
Record the meter safely
If your meter is safely accessible, follow your water supplier’s leak-check guidance and record the reading and time. Make a note of appliances or automatic equipment that may use water. Do not enter unsafe meter pits or disturb supplier equipment.
Explain what you found
Share the readings and any supplier notification with your leak specialist. Tell them where the meter and internal stop valve are and whether your supply is shared. These details help plan checks on internal plumbing versus the private incoming supply. A meter observation is a starting clue, not a precise leak location.
